Catastrophic floods have plunged Portugal into a national emergency, with torrential rain from several storms destroying an estimated 5,000 houses and leaving at least 16 people dead. Entire neighborhoods are currently submerged.
Infrastructure has also suffered extensive damage, compounding the humanitarian crisis. Floodwaters have cut off roads and rail links, collapsed bridges, and damaged power lines, leaving several areas without electricity or clean water for extended periods.
